What's Your Summer Plan? ☀️
Summer is here and we're all excited to get out of the house and have some adventures! Here's what we're recommending this first week of June.
The Vessel at Hudson Yards in NYC has reopened to visitors after closing in 2021. Tickets are $10.
What’s New This Week - Summer Travel Planning! 😎
As we wind down the school year, we gear up for all the activities our kids will do this summer to keep busy in their downtime. As you’re considering where to go, keep these mom-approved destinations in mind:
Theme Parks in New England: For families on the East Coast, Disney World is an obvious choice for kid time, but for a better price and less travel, consider these New England theme park destinations for convenient AND maximized fun.
Kid-Friendly Activities in Las Vegas: You’ve probably been here on trips with other adults, but Vegas actually has some hidden gems that kids love visiting!
Things to Do with Kids in Toronto: After exploring with an elementary school-age child, these were our favorite things to do in Canada’s largest city (bonus: includes a parent date-night suggestion!).
Conduct the Philharmonic at the Boston Children’s Museum: Are you a local or spending a little time east this summer? The Boston Children’s Museum has some great special events included in regular admission, like this chance to learn how to conduct an orchestra tomorrow.
What We’re Reading This Week 📖
Braiding Sweetgrass - Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants: Explore the reciprocal relationships between humans and the land, drawing from both Western and Native American teachings on botany. Get your little learners the young adult edition for an age-appropriate read-along! [from Jordan]
Why More U.S. Schools are Embracing a New ‘Science of Reading’: In recent history, there have been two main schools of thought on teaching kids to read. Teachers and schools are now shifting away from the “whole language” method in favor of the “science of reading” method, particularly in a post-pandemic world. [from Jordan]
Where Will NYC Get More Teachers, Space to Make Smaller Classes?: NYC has mandated that public school class sizes reduce by almost 30% by September 2027. My kid’s school will be testing this out starting Fall 2026, which we parents are all excited for. But this also affects school budgets, staff, and hiring. [from Jenn]
How We’re Feeling This Week 😐
You know it’s one of those weeks when you’ve been telling yourself (since Monday), “I just need to make it through Sunday.”
This week, we have two school holidays, four hours of doctor appointments, 1.5 hours of school performance, solo parenting this weekend, and a piano recital to close it all out.
Where I typically start off with ~28 hours of alone time to be productive, this work week has been chopped down to 15 hours.
On the bright side? I got to watch a bunch of 6-year-olds sing Rock Around The Clock and dance the [Chubby Checker] Twist while dressed in pink poodle skirts and cuffed jeans. :) [from our resident mom Jenn]
