What We’re Reading This Week 📖
Disney and the Decline of America’s Middle Class: In the early years of Disney, CEO Michael Eisner created a bevy of products for the affluent — including fancier hotels, a cruise line and white-tablecloth restaurants. But he rejected the idea of allowing customers to pay to skip lines at the parks. This changed with the growing ranks of the affluent, data-driven customer insights, and COVID. Today, a family of five will spend $8,000 for a 7-day stay in Orlando — and that’s without the perks of staying at an expensive Disney resort or purchasing skip-the-line passes. An AI Private School is Doubling Its US Footprint: Alpha Schools is a “teacherless” private school, where students spend no more than two hours a day on core academics (taught through AI). They devote the rest of the day to developing life skills, like grit, financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Started in 2014 in Austin TX, Alpha Schools is expanding to CA, NY, NC and Puerto Rico this fall.
Thousands of New NYC Teachers To Begin Amid Class Size Hiring Push: In a typical year, NYC faces hires between 4,000 and 5,000 new educators to replace the ones who left. This year, officials aim to hire 3,700 on top of that to satisfy the state’s class size reduction law. This year, the Education Department doubled the size of its cohort of NYC Teaching Fellows, an expedited pathway that allows new teachers to earn their certification while in the classroom.
How We’re Feeling This Week: Round like a 🍉🍉🍉!
With only a month left until the baby reaches full term, this pregnant momma feels as round as a watermelon. Energy levels have dropped precipitously and tasks that usually take 10 minutes may well take 30 minutes to an hour. Late stage pregnancy is no fun, and moms-to-be would use a wide range of terms to describe the physical feelings of the third trimester like feeling as big as a whale 🐋 or waddling like a penguin 🐧.
And feelings in the third trimester are just as colorful as those hormonal puberty years with a rollercoaster of emotions that swing between exuberant excitement to anxiety or downright depression, and in rare cases psychosis. And this rainbow spectrum of feelings is well pretty normal, but normal doesn’t make it easier. Though a good reminder to myself is that these pregnancy blues will pass, and soon enough (ie 1-2 years) I’ll get back to feeling comfortable in my own skin and body.
Sending a bit of love and care to all the mommas out there this week who may be quietly struggling and needs a little bit of reminder that you’re wonderful and some understanding. ❤️
Signing off,
